This web site is the home of the Sea Urchin Genome Database. The information system residing here attempts to provide up-to-date information on genomes, genes and annotations for the use of the experimental scientist while preserving the extensive primary annotations made in conjunction with the primary sequencing of the purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) genome.

It is our policy to post new sequence information in a timely way as well as insuring the primary datasets we use are archived at Genbank and other public data sites. The current release of the purple sea urchin genome assembly is fourth in the series showing substantial improvements at each step. Useful information from the old SUGP web site and data collections is also included here.

In addition to providing the primary site for genomic information on the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, this site maintains comparative information from allied species which is useful in comparative analyses. All of the organisms covered here are primarily used as research models in developmental biology, cell biology, gene regulation molecular biology, evolutionary biology, metabolic biochemistry and marine biology. All curated sequences are posted to Genbank at NCBI. Identical data sets and correlative information is also posted at the following web sites:

The effort to sequence the purple sea urchin genome and additional echinoderm genomes is supported by the Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health through the Baylor College of Medicine, Human Genome Sequencing Center, Houston, Texas.
